A 4am pickup in the dark, or landing at Bristol at midnight after a delayed flight, is a different experience when you are travelling on your own — particularly for women, and particularly when the alternative is a car you know nothing about. Here is what is reasonable to expect from a transfer company, and what to ask before you book.
What a good operator should tell you without being asked
- Who is coming, and in what. Driver name and vehicle registration, sent in advance rather than discovered at the curb.
- Confirmation the night before for an early pickup — so you are not lying awake wondering whether a car will actually arrive at 4am.
- A real phone number that a person answers, not only an app or a form. At 4am that distinction matters.
- Flight tracking on arrivals, so a delayed landing does not leave you alone in an empty terminal at 1am working out what to do.
None of that is exotic — it is simply what pre-booked, licensed private hire should look like. If a company cannot offer it, that tells you something.
Questions worth asking outright
“Will you send me the driver’s name and car registration before the journey?” A straightforward yes is what you want. It also means you can verify the car that turns up is the right one.
“Are your drivers DBS checked?” An enhanced DBS check is standard for licensed private hire drivers. Ours are, and we will say so plainly.
“What happens if my flight is delayed by three hours?” The answer should involve tracking the actual flight and adjusting, not you making phone calls from arrivals.
“Can I request the same driver?” For regular journeys, familiarity is worth a lot. A small firm can usually accommodate this; a large app-based platform generally cannot.
Practical things that cost nothing
- Share your journey details with someone before you set off — the same way you would share a flight number.
- Sit in the back if you would rather not make conversation; no professional driver will think anything of it.
- Check the car registration against your confirmation before opening the door, not after.
- If you are collected from arrivals, meet & greet inside the terminal is calmer than finding a car in a dark pickup area — it is worth asking for.
On female drivers
Some passengers would simply rather be driven by a woman, especially late at night or travelling alone. That is a reasonable preference and does not need justifying to anyone.
