Getting into the wrong car is the single easiest thing to avoid in private hire travel, and almost nobody checks. Here is what to look for — it takes about ten seconds and applies anywhere in England and Wales.
The difference that matters: hackney carriage vs private hire
There are two legally distinct types of licensed vehicle in the UK, and confusing them is where people get caught out.
A hackney carriage (a traditional taxi) can be hailed in the street or picked up at a rank. A private hire vehicle — which is what most airport transfer and chauffeur companies operate, including us — must be booked in advance through a licensed operator. It is not legally allowed to accept a passenger who simply walks up and asks for a ride.
This matters for your safety: if a car offers you a lift at an airport, a station or outside a venue and you have not booked it, that journey is not covered by the operator’s licence or, critically, by its insurance — regardless of what the driver tells you.
The three things to check
- The licence plate on the vehicle. Licensed private hire vehicles display a licence plate issued by the council, usually on the rear and often a smaller one at the front. It carries a licence number and an expiry date.
- The driver’s badge. Licensed drivers are issued a badge with their photo and licence number, and are generally required to display or produce it. If you cannot see one, you are entitled to ask.
- The booking details match. A legitimate pre-booked journey means the operator already knows your name, your pickup, and which driver is coming. Check the car registration and driver name against what you were sent — not just the make and colour.
Before the car arrives
A good operator gives you the information you need to make that check possible. Ours sends confirmation of the booking in writing and confirms early-morning pickups the night before; on the day you know who is coming and in what. If a company cannot tell you the driver and vehicle in advance, that is worth noting.
If you are travelling alone, sharing your journey details with someone before you set off costs nothing and is simply sensible — the same way you would tell a friend which flight you are on.
If something does not feel right
You are never obliged to get into a vehicle. If the plate is missing, the details do not match what you were sent, or the driver cannot produce a badge, do not get in — call the operator on the number you booked with (not a number the driver gives you) and check. A legitimate company will want you to do exactly that.
Who licenses whom
Private hire licensing in England and Wales is handled by local councils, which means the specific rules and the look of the plates vary slightly between areas. What does not vary is the principle: the vehicle, the driver and the operator all have to be licensed, and all three should be verifiable.

If you would prefer a female driver
Some passengers are simply more comfortable with a female driver, and that is a perfectly reasonable preference rather than something to justify. - Never accept an unbooked ride from a private hire car, wherever it approaches you.
- Check the council licence plate on the vehicle and the driver’s badge.
- Match the registration and driver name to your booking confirmation.
